History

As the deployment of automatic weather stations continued throughout the 1980s, the U.K. Met Office’s dependence on professional observers at civil airports diminished, and they were progressively withdrawn. The Met Office’s interest in the operational instrumentation at those airports similarly diminished, and the requirement became more evident for an organisation capable of providing expert maintenance and calibration services, particularly for airport meteorological systems.

Recognising this requirement, as well as other market opportunities, two experienced Met Office engineers got together in the late 1980s to start formulating a business strategy. It took some years to complete the market research and fine tune the plan, but MetEngUK commenced trading in 1991 and Meteorological Engineering Limited was incorporated in April 1997. The business was renamed as the more manageable Met Engineering Limited and, to accommodate improved facilities and addition staff, moved into larger premises at Mode Wheel Road, Manchester in 2003.
