MetEngUK upgrades AviMet for Cambridge Airport

MetEngUK upgrades AviMet for Cambridge Airport

News Release No: 9/2011 - The Vaisala AviMet® installation at Cambridge Airport, U.K., completed by MetEngUK in March 2008, was today enhanced by the inclusion of specialised sensors to indicate runway surface temperature and other critical parameters.

MetEngUK engineers working alongside engineers from Vaisala and Traffic Direct, cut away sections of the runway in order to install the specialised, mutifunction sensors flush with the pavement surface. The whole operation was completed in one day, including making good the tarmac, so that any disturbance to aircraft movements was kept to an absolute minimum.

The new runway surface information system will provide accurate temperature data to air traffic control staff, and allow confident decisions to be made regarding the turning of heavy aircraft whilst still on the runway.
