As part of a substantial modernisation programme of the operational meteorological systems at Belfast City Airport, Met Engineering Limited (MetEngUK) today completed the installation and commissioning of a Vaisala CT25K laser ceilometer system.
For operational reasons, the field unit needed to be installed at a remote site on the airfield, approximately 1500 metres from the display equipment in the control tower. Consequently, MetEngUK had to develop a reliable method of telemetering the ceilometer data over this distance.
The airport authorities were particularly pleased with this addition to their range of ‘met’ equipment, which incorporates an optional sky condition algorithm to present the controllers with a representation of cloud amounts, as well as precise cloud base height information.
