The old wind sensors at Portsmouth Commercial Port had given trouble for many years, and on 4 August 2003, were finally replaced by a modern Vaisala system based on the WD30 averaging wind display unit.
The new system, installed and commissioned by MetEngUK engineers, consists of the well-proven WAT12 analogue wind data transmitter, fitted with WA sensors, and mounted on a high (15 metre) lighting mast above the harbour; the industry-standard current-loop transmitter outputs are fed to a WD30 display unit, mounted in the harbour control office.
A big advantage of the new system is that it can readily indicate wind speed and direction, averaged over two-minute and 10-minute periods, as well as provide instantaneous wind data.
